The Record Buyer’s Guide - November 1978
By Carter Allen

Rock ‘n’ Roll will never die in Boston, that’s for sure, and The Stompers are determined to do their part to keep the spirit alive and well. Between the hundredth gig the band celebrated at the Rathskeller in released mid-August and their one year anniversary due in November, The Stompers have released their first single. Recorded at Waveform Studios in Waltham, Mass., and pressed by Double Eagle Records the first single features two originals by founding singer and guitarist Sal Baglio.

One of Boston’s best rock ‘n’ roll guitarists, Sal laid the foundation for The Stompers in his desire to record and perform originals in the context of 60’s rock hits, which in turn sprang from 50’s r&r roots. To this end the band has united and remained a creative unit playing dates throughout Boston and New Hampshire. The logical second step of getting something on vinyl is never reached by most rock bands, but now that The Stompers have achieved it, they’re hopeful that the public will be interested in their product.
A typically frenetic Stomper’s treatment is found on “Coast to Coast,” a pure slice of rock ‘n’ roll urged along by guest saxman Billy Coover of the Memphis Rockabilly Band. Bill has guested on several Stompers shows including a recent pair of gigs warming the stage for the Dead Boys. Also outstanding on the track is drummer Marc Cuccinello who powers a fierce backbeat (“You can’t lose it!”) and pulls some accelerated fills while the band sets up each chorus.

The flip, “I’m in Trouble” is slower, a comfortable melody layered by sax and Dave Friedman’s organ over drums and a Steve Gilligan bass line. The two songs are familiar segments of any frantic evening with The Stompers and well worth repeated listenings. A thousand copies have been pressed and if the band doesn’t give them out to all the friends they’ve made in the last year, you can acquire one for $1.50 at Double Eagle Records, P.O.
